What's Open, Closed For New Year's Day In Falls Church

Some services will be closed for the first day of 2019, while others will be closed on New Year's Eve too.

FALLS CHURCH, VA—As families get another (or continued) break to ring in 2019, services around Falls Church have different hours for the holiday.

City offices, schools, parks and other services will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Some services like transit will be during New Year's Eve events like Watch Night Falls Church. Services will resume Tuesday, Jan. 2 unless otherwise noted.

City of Falls Church Offices: Closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Offices: Closed Jan. 1.

Falls Church City Public Schools: Closed Dec. 24-Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Dec. 24-Jan. 4.

State Offices: Arlington and Fairfax County courts are closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Community Centers: The Falls Church Community Center is closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities will be closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a holiday weekday schedule on New Year's Eve and a Sunday schedule on New Year's Day. Fastran will not operate on Jan. 1. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.

Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library is closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Fairfax County libraries are closed Jan. 1.

Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metro will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. on a regular weekday schedule. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m.-11 p.m., off-peak fares will be in effect and parking will be free at Metro lots and garages. There is no track work scheduled for Dec. 31-Jan. 1. For more information, visit www.wmata.com.

Metrobus: On Dec. 31, Metrobus will operate on a normal schedule. On Jan. 1, Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. Visit www.wmata.com for more details on specific routes.

Parks: All Fairfax County-operated parks are closed on Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Recreation Centers: All rec centers except George Washington RECenter are open regular hours until 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Rec centers are open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on New Year's Day. George Washington RECenter is closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Recycling: I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) will close at 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve and remain closed on New Year's Day.

Trash Pickup: City of Falls Church collections will happen as scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 2. There is no change to Fairfax County collections on New Year's Day. Leave all materials at the curb/street line by 6 a.m. on Jan. 1. Trash-recycling administrative office will be closed on Jan. 1. Contact private service providers for holiday hours.
