Package Van Theft Leads To Multi-Vehicle Crash In Fairfax County

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Fairfax County police have charged an Alexandria man after a stolen package delivery van crashed into multiple vehicles in Lorton on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one woman hospitalized with serious injuries.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers responded at about 3:30 p.m. to the area of Richmond Highway and Lorton Road for a multi-vehicle crash involving a stolen package delivery van. Detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit, Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit and Criminal Investigations Division are investigating.

Police said detectives preliminarily determined that Ibrahim Osman Hussein, 31, of Alexandria, stole an unoccupied 2020 Ram ProMaster while a delivery driver was making deliveries in the 9100 block of Richmond Highway in the Mount Vernon District. According to police, Hussein then drove southbound on Richmond Highway and struck multiple vehicles, causing minor damage.

After that initial crash, police said, Hussein crossed into the northbound lanes near Lorton Road and hit a 2015 Nissan Altima and a 2023 Nissan Sentra before the van came to rest. Hussein was taken into custody and sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to police. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said the adult female driver of the Nissan Altima was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition and remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was not injured.

Later that day, officers responded to a burglary report in the 9300 block of Old Colchester Road in Lorton. Through that investigation, officers identified Hussein as a suspect in the burglary, and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division took over the case, according to police.

Police said Hussein remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives obtained and served arrest warrants charging him with burglary, felony hit and run, reckless driving, grand larceny, trespassing and petit larceny. According to police, he is being held without bond and will be transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center once medically cleared.

Hussein was schedule to be arraigned at 10 a.m. in Fairfax County General District Court and a preliminary hearing was set for 2 p.m. on July 22, according to court documents.
