FREDERICKSBURG, VA — In Fredericksburg, 4,000 city trash customers will receive a new, microchipped trash cart by Friday. City officials have asked residents to place their old trash cart out this week for collection.
The city allocated $276,000 for the new microchipped trash carts in the 2024 budget using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. On its website, city officials said the older trash carts were distributed in 2014 and showed signs of wear.
Public Works officials noted that the new microchipped carts will save money by allowing for inventory control.

"The new RFID tagged roll-out carts offer efficient tracking of inventory, which will result in fewer City containers, greater cost-savings and improved stewardship of resources in Fredericksburg."
