7 Upcoming NoVA Food Festivals Celebrating Everything From Pupusas To Pickles

Get ready for a culinary odyssey in Northern Virginia, with plenty of chances to sample new foods, discover unfamiliar flavors and explore cultural traditions.

Food is deeply tied to identity, heritage and community. Recipes passed from one generation to the next preserve not only favorite and signature dishes but also family stories, customs and connections to the past.

Many food festivals build on that connection with music, performances and other activities that turn a meal into a broader cultural celebration for all ages.

Fall is an especially busy season for food festivals, when harvests are coming in and many fruits and vegetables are at their peak. That abundance gives communities a natural reason to gather, celebrate and put seasonal ingredients front and center.

We’ve rounded up some food festivals in Northern Virginia that you shouldn’t miss.

• Aug. 15: Del Ray’s Summer Bar Crawl. This year is the sixth edition of the event, in which more than 15 restaurant locations unite to create an archipelago of cocktail, mocktail and food specials along Mt. Vernon Avenue. There will be live music at each outdoor venue, and this year’s event raises money for The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, a local non-profit that assists students and their families by providing college and career advising and scholarship opportunities to Alexandria City High School graduates. Early registration is $15; on the day of the event it will be $25. The event is held on Mt. Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood.

• Aug. 16: Manassas will host its seventh annual Salvadoran Festival, with music, singers, dancers, clowns and, of course, lots of food. Organized by the Salvadoran American Council (COSALVA), the festival promises dishes from Central America, Mexico, and South America, plus a wide variety of crafts. COSALVA is a community organization whose mission is to unite and empower communities through culture, education, and sports. This event is held at Manassas’ Harris Pavilion at 9201 Center Street.

• Aug. 29: Alexandria’s Around The World Cultural Food Festival celebrates its 10th birthday. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the city’s Oronoco Bay Park, sample cuisine representing countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East while checking out traditional dance performances, browsing the market stalls of international artisans and local small businesses and other family activities. Catch it at Oronoco Park at 100 Madison Street.

• Sept. 5-6: McLean’s Holy Transfiguration Church holds its 33rd Annual Middle Eastern Food Festival. Starting at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 and running until 5 p.m. Sept. 6, enjoy favorites like shish kebob, falafel, shawarma and baklava and much more, including a selection of rich desserts. There will also be live music, moon bounces, a petting zoo and more family activities, as well as auctions and plenty of opportunities to dance. Admission and parking are free, and online ordering is available here. The event is held at the Holy Transfiguration Church, 8501 Lewinsville Rd., in McLean.

• Sept. 5: Sample George Washington’s whiskey! Historic Mount Vernon has revived the first president’s whiskey recipe and is offering a tasting of three spirits distilled using 18th-century techniques. The tastings are held at George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill at 5513 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

• Sept. 19: The Taste of Falls Church Festival celebrates the community’s restaurants, brewers and local businesses, with more than 90 crafters, businesses and civic organizations lined up. There will be live music throughout the event, along with kids’ activities like pony rides and inflatable slides. The event is held at the Falls Church Community Center at 223 Little Falls Street.

• Oct. 17-18: Chantilly hosts one of the more unusual fall food fests – a Pickle and International Food Festival, hosted by Blue Ridge Pickling. The mouth-puckering party promises more than 50 vendors, a lineup of international foods, craft beers, fall cocktails, limited merchandise drops and more. The event is held at Crooked Run Fermentation, 24454 Carolina Rose Circle, Suite #110.
