3 Sexual Battery Incidents Reported On 2 Fredericksburg Trails

Fredericksburg police are investigating reports of three sexual battery incidents along two trails in the city.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Three recent sexual battery incidents reported along the Canal Path and Heritage Trail, including one reported Wednesday afternoon, are being investigated by Fredericksburg police.

The first assault happened March 19, along the Canal Path; the second happened March 23, along the Heritage Trail, and the third happened about 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday along the Heritage Trail.

In each of the three cases, the suspect approached a female, grabbed her buttocks and fled on foot, according to the department. Police described the March 19 suspect as a male about 5-foot-10, between 25 and 35 years old, with a medium build. The March 23 suspect was described as a male about 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-1 with a medium build.

Police said the suspect in the March 25 case is described as a male, possibly Hispanic, about 5-foot-7, with short black hair.

Investigators are are working the case and asking anyone who may have witnessed the assaults or may have surveillance footage from the area or surrounding areas to contact police immediately.

The department also said it continues to investigate a sexual assault reported Oct. 19, 2025, at about 9 p.m. on the canal path between Washington Avenue and Emancipation Highway near Cossey Pond.

In that case, the suspect is described as a male about 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-5, medium build, and possibly Middle Eastern, Hispanic or Indian, according to police.

The Fredericksburg Police Department said it “takes these incidents very seriously” and “will be increasing patrols along the canal path while remaining committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens.” The department also reminded residents to stay vigilant while walking or exercising outdoors, especially after dark, and to report suspicious activity promptly.

Police advised people walking at night or in poorly lit areas to go with a friend, keep one ear free if listening to music and carry a charged phone. The department said people who have experienced sexual assault and need support can contact the Rappahannock Council Against Sexual Assault at rcasa.org or call the 24/7 hotline at 540-371-1666.
