500+ Neglected Animals Rescued From Virginia Farm: Police
Nearly 500 animals in various stages of neglect were removed from a 40-acre Louisa County Virginia farm, authorities said.
LOUISA, VA — Nearly 500 animals in various stages of neglect were rescued Wednesday at a 40-acre Louisa farm about halfway between Fredericksburg and Charlottesville, according to the Louisa County Sheriff's Office. An officer, Donnie Lowe, told Richmond-based WRIC television that, "I've never seen anything this bad in my career."
Nine animals were found dead, and among those removed from the site were horses, emus, goats, sheep, guinea pigs, cats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys and a peacock. More than 300 animals were placed in a temporary shelter. Police were alerted about the poor conditions after receiving a call about goats in the road.
The farm belongs to a 77-year-old woman, and her son, Cecil Colna, told WRIC that for years, his mother has used the property as a dumping ground for unwanted pets.

She doesn't live on the property. Police said charges may be forthcoming. Veterinarians told the station that three goats and two guinea pigs had to be euthanized. The rescued animals are being temporarily housed at the Louisa Fireman's Fairgrounds.
