Louisa Man Jailed After Spotsylvania Traffic Stop Uncovers Drugs, Gun, Sheriff Says

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A Louisa man is facing multiple felony drug, firearm and child endangerment charges after a traffic stop in Spotsylvania County led deputies to discover narcotics and a gun inside his vehicle while his two young children were passengers, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Sunday in the 10100 block of Patriot Highway, where a Spotsylvania sheriff's deputy recognized a driver whose license was suspended, the sheriff's office said.

According to investigators, the vehicle was towed because there was no licensed driver available to take custody of it. Deputies conducted an inventory search before the tow, during which the driver allegedly became enraged and was detained.

The search uncovered a firearm along with multiple narcotics, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies said the driver's two young children were also inside the vehicle.

William Maynard, 35, of Louisa, was arrested and charged with:

• Possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I/II controlled substance
• Three counts of possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance
• Possession of a Schedule III controlled substance
• Possession of a firearm while in possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance
• Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
• Two counts of felony child abuse or neglect
• Two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor
• Two counts of failure to secure a child in a child restraint device

Maynard was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond.

The sheriff's office thanked the Fredericksburg-area Cook Out restaurant for providing meals to the two children during the incident, saying the gesture helped care for the children while deputies handled the investigation.

Sheriff's officials also credited the deputy's proactive patrol for leading to the arrest and the seizure of illegal drugs and a firearm.
