Fasting in Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims are required to fast during this holy month. Muslims begin their fast by having a meal called “suhoor” at dawn and end by partaking in “iftar” at sunset. During this summer month, here in the USA, the fast lasts for 17-18 hours.
The Holy Quran in Chapter 2 verse 184 says, “ O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous.” We know that fasting is in every major religion in some form.
The most significant aspect of Ramadan is “Laylatul Qadr” or the “Night of Decree”. The 97th chapter of Holy Quran is named Al-Qadr which states, “ Surely, We sent it down on the Night of Destiny. And what should make thee know what the Night of Destiny is? The Night of Destiny is better than a thousand months.Therein descend angels and the Spirit by the command of their Lord — with every matter” (97: 1-5).
