All Children Need Someone to Call Mom (or Dad)

Mother's Day is Sunday. The children in Virginia's foster care system all need someone to celebrate Mother's Day with. Someone to tell them to do their homework. Someone to love.

Every week I write to you about something related to motherhood, foster care and how much these children need our help. In thinking about this coming Sunday being Mother's Day, I started daydreaming about the days before I had kids. You know, when you could sleep in, set your own agenda for the day, and go to work without snot, vomit or dried oatmeal on your clothes. In my sleep deprived current state of having twin six-month-olds and a three-year-old, I look back fondly on those days.

But you know what, I wouldn't go back. I love being a mom and I love how much joy my children bring me every day. From the crazy antics of my three-year-old drama filled daughter to the milestones my boys are reaching every day, I love every minute of it.

This brings me to my point today. May is National Foster Care Awareness Month. In Virginia, there are 5,300 children in the foster care system at any time. Those are 5,300 children who do not get to spend Mother's Day with their biological mother. While many of these kids will eventually be reunited with their families or relatives in some way, almost 2,000 will be available for adoption.

These children will all need someone to call Mom or Dad. They will need someone to wish them happy birthday; someone to tell them to do their homework; someone to check under the bed for monsters. Someone to love them.
