Storms, Multiple Chances Of Rain: VA Mother's Day Weekend Forecast

Forecasters are also predicting a dramatic temperature shift for Northern Virginia later this week into early next week.

Multiple chances of rain and a few thunderstorms could dampen plans in Northern Virginia this Mother's Day weekend, according to the latest forecasts.

After two days of showers, conditions are expected to dry out on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Increasing clouds are possible later in the day with high temperatures reaching the lower 70s in the Baltimore region.

After Friday, several chances for showers and even a few thunderstorms are possible every day through early next week, according to forecasts.

On Saturday, showers are likely, with thunderstorms also possible between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Expect mostly cloudy skies with a high temperature in the mid- to upper 70s.

By Sunday, a shift in temperature will accompany mostly sunny skies during the day with additional chances for showers Sunday night. Highs could reach the lower 80s while rain is expected to continue into the overnight hours.

A cold front will move into Virginia behind Sunday's warmer weather, causing temperatures to once again drop and highs to settle in the mid-60s.

Rain chances may also linger into Monday morning and afternoon and will end as the cold front swings offshore. With high pressure moving in from the west Monday night into Tuesday, overnight low temperatures could feasibly drop into the mid-30s in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 71. Light west wind increasing to 9 to 14 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 55. South wind 6 to 8 mph.

Saturday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 73. South wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Mostly cloudy during the early evening, then becoming clear, with a low around 56. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday: Showers likely, mainly before 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday Night: A chance of showers before 8pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 48. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 66.
