Mom drives off with infant on roof of car, what in the world!

So here we are again, bringing to light another stellar parenting blunder. Several days ago the story of the mother who placed her infant son on the roof of her car and drove away, came zipping into my newswire. You can find the story here http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2012/06/03/19830826.html?cid=rssnews. The details are as follows: A 19 year old mother strapped her 5 week old infant into his car seat, and for some reason put the car seat on the roof of her vehicle, and forgetting the infant was there drove away. Since car seats are not magnetized or made for roof travel, the infant fell off of the roof in the middle of the street. Thank the Lord that the child was uninjured. At this point I think the designer and manufacturer of the car seat deserve some applause. The mother didn't figure out that she was missing the son until she got home and saw that there was no baby on board. She was of course arrested upon coming back to find the baby. You may be asking yourself how this could have happened and frankly so am I. The story that she gave police is that earlier in the evening, she and her boyfriend were smoking marijuana in the park, with the baby present mind you, and they left the park to go by some beer. The car was stopped, apparently for eradic driving, and the boyfriend was arrested. The mother was so distraught that she drove herself and the baby to a friends house and smoked some more weed in order to cope with this earlier stressor and left around midnight, forgetting her baby on the roof and the rest you know.
What in the world is going on here? I understand leaving a cup of coffee on the roof or even sunglasses, but an infant? When I read this to some people for discussion, I was shocked at some of the responses that I received. The shock and horror of the danger to the child quickly gave way to the argument of whether marijuana is safe to use around children. To my astonishment, two camps quickly arose. The one camp said that marijuana does not cause memory issues like this and that the use of marijuana should not be attributed to this travesty. The other camp, equally as vehement, stood firmly on the plank that marijuana does in fact alter and slow the mental process and is as dangerous as alcohol around children. Here I was outraged for the child and the overall terrible parenting exhibited and other people were more concerned with how the use of marijuana would be projected to the public. What say you? Do you believe that using marijuana around children is not a dangerous undertaking and should not be prosecuted or do you agree with camp 2 that the use of marijuana is just as dangerous as drinking to much? Do you think that this young mother should be prosecuted for Child Abuse? I do not know if this is the going to be a national trend, but quite possibly this 5 week old baby is the new face of the Legalize it, battle.
Let it be said, whatever your opinion on the drug, that this is just another headline highlighting the fact that we as a society must place the appropriately high value on protecting our children and that this sentiment must be our watchword and song. We as a society first view our children as the precious future that they are, and put a premium on their safety.
