I have lived in the Fredericksburg/Stafford Region for well over 12 years now and have noticed the large number of criminal indictments as the years have gone on. Today I will focus on the Stafford County Courts as it stands out more than the others in the 15th District. While we had The Chichester Family who ran the Commonwealth's Attorneys office for a combined 72 years between father and son, we now have Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Olsen who took the reigns January 2012 after being the assistant for many years. What I would love to see with this office is fairness and transparency for the citizens who have to go through this process whether guilty or innocent, whether a victim or accused. It has come to my attention in a big way that this has not been the case for many decades now and that the office simply uses its own discretion when it comes to following the letter of the Law.
I would love to see a Citizens review Board appointed with this new administration and a new page turned. A group of tax-paying citizens who review complaints (outside of internal affairs) without bias and or motive. Many of the surrounding counties have these boards which not only keep the process fair but seem to elevate corruption, false charges, false imprisonment and the loss of tens of thousands of tax dollars.
While there are a great number of law enforcement and officers of the court who are upstanding and above board, you will always have those bad apples who thumb their noses at the law and act as if they are above the Constitution. This Board will serve as a constant reminder that they are in fact "Public Servants" who are placed in the position to protect and serve "The Public".
