Fashion Friday: Understanding the Basics of Denim to Discover Your Perfect Jean

Finding the perfect jean is almost as daunting as swimsuit shopping!  I do know this, though, when you find "the one"...the hunt is totally worth it.  I hope the following tips will help you understand the basics of denim and lead you to a pair that will be your "go-to" for years to come...

First thing is first, know the most common styles/cuts and try each one on to know what works for your shape, and what doesn't.

1.  High Waisted  (5-9" rise)

2.  Low Rise (3-5" rise)

3.  Skinny (tight/tapered leg all the way down)

4.  Straight (same length all the way down)

5.  Boot-cut (wider at bottom by 1/2 to 1")

6.  Flare (wider at bottom by 2-4")

7.  Boyfriend (loose, relaxed fit; worn in)

Secondly, know the basic guidelines to denim:

• Dark washes are dressier and usually more slimming.
• Junk in the trunk?  Generally, you want to avoid larger back packets with extra details, hard wear, etc.
• Boot-cut is universally flattering.
• Stretch denim should have no more than 2% lycra--a good fabric will follow your curves, but keep their shape.
• Skinny looks best when not too snug at waist (avoid muffin top)

Finally, pay close attention to the length. Buy a pair in a long length to accommodate your heels (pants should cover most of the heel and skim the floor for the most modern look).  Buy a shorter pair (or hem) to wear with
flops or flats.  This is one of my biggest pet-peeves!  Pay attention to the length and adjust heel height accordingly.
