Top 10 Wedding Make-up Mistakes

Ten make-up mistakes, weddings.

Brides want to look their very best on their big day. I have made of list of things that can cause photo sabotage and potentially make a bride feel less than her most gorgeous.

  1. Getting a facial or brow wax/threading too close to the wedding day! These procedures can cause redness and irritation and in the case of facials, can lead to skin purging (i.e. breakouts!) I recommend doing a facial 10 days or more out from your wedding. Brows should be shaped and groomed by someone trusted and should be done two days or more prior.

  2. Highlighter abuse. To shine in pictures can be tricky. No one wants a shiny t-zone. Highlighter should ONLY be applied to cheek bones, cupid's bow and collarbones.

  • Mineral make-up. I cannot stress enough the reason I hate this product. It shines and causes a flashback in photos from the mica particles. In pictures, its translates to making a bride look oily! No one will want to see that in 20 years!

  • SPF. We all know we should be wearing a sunscreen to stay healthy and supposedly, wrinkle free. However, on the big day it is a big NO-NO. SPF causes “flashback” meaning in pictures it creates a ghostly white glow to skin -- not attractive.

  • Brows. I don't understand this phenomenon but trust me, it happens. Eye brows disappear in pictures. They must be filled in with a brow product that is complimentary to the bride's skin tone and about one shade lighter than her hair. I prefer powders. Otherwise, she may look like Mona Lisa.

  • Powder!!! Powder is SO important on a big day where photographs are being captured. Use a powder puff and a good loose setting powder.

  • Assuming a good friend can do your make-up. I have seen this again and again. A friend volunteers to do a bride's make-up and arrives with her own cosmetics and goes to town. Typically, the look she is going for is the one she applied to herself that a.m. This is a huge wedding NO-NO. A friend is likely not sanitizing her collection and problems can occur.  If the need for a make-up artist is not in the budget, YouTube offers a wealth of knowledge and tutorials.

  • Spray tan. Don't. Just don't. They are way too orange, shine like mad and can rub off on your dress. Bronzer is an option. A better one is to embrace your skin tone with flattering colors.

  • Lashes. I know, make-up artists sometimes charge anywhere from 10-30 dollars extra for these. Just say yes. They look so glamorous and eyes become much more front and center in pictures.

  • Considering hiring a make-up artist. It is the most important day in a bride's life and a make-up artist can ensure your day's beginning is enjoyable and stress free.
