The
Fredericksburg Area Museum & Cultural Center (FAMCC) is pleased to announce
two new exhibitions as part of its Community
Artist Series. The exhibitions will feature the work of influential local
artist Jack Darling and the North Windsor Artists.
Few
artists of the Fredericksburg region have been as influential as John S. “Jack”
Darling (1911-2007) of King George County. A US Navy technical illustrator by
trade, as a youth Darling studied art under Charles Webster Hawthorne at the
summer art schools of Provincetown, Rhode Island. Later, he trained under
Thornton Oakley at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts.
Darling’s
home and studio, North Windsor, eventually became a meeting place for talented
local artists to paint and critique their work. This group was dubbed the North
Windsor Artists, and today its members are among the region’s best known and
most active artists.
