Drive On Stafford Co. Railroad Tracks Ends In DUI Arrest: Police

According to a Stafford County sheriff's report, the driver mistook the tracks for a road and got stuck after making a right hand turn.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Two people were taken into custody by Stafford County deputies Saturday night after the vehicle they were in stalled on the railroad tracks at Brent Point and Arkendale roads. According to a sheriff's office report, both the driver and passenger in the vehicle were extremely intoxicated.

On Sept. 28 at about 9:30 p.m., a deputy responded to reports of a disabled vehicle on the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Corvonte Morales, 28, of Temple Hills, Md. The deputy also found two passengers in the vehicle — a woman identified as Ronnica Smith, 30, of Washington, D.C., and their 2-year-old daughter.

Morales told the deputy he confused the railroad tracks with an actual road, and proceeded to get stuck after making a right turn onto the tracks. According to the report, the deputy immediately detected the strong odor of alcohol emanating Morales. His eyes were also bloodshot and glassy, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet, the report says.

Morales admitted to having several drinks at the nearby winery. A field sobriety test was conducted and a search warrant for blood was later executed.

During the incident, Smith also appeared to be extremely intoxicated. According to the report, she was unsteady on her feet as she held the child and almost dropped her several times. Additionally, a paramedic on scene said he observed Morales slap Smith across the face before deputies arrived.

Morales was taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license, refusal, obstruction of justice, child abuse, and domestic assault and battery. He was
held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

Smith was also taken into custody for public intoxication, child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a secured bond. The child was turned over to the custody of a family member.
