UPDATED: Driver Dies After Crashing into Tree at Old Mill Park

Update 4:13 p.m. The Fredericksburg Police Department said the identity of the man who died when his 1998 Mercury hit a tree at Old Mill Park is Paul Hinson, 51, of Stafford County. He does have family in Stafford.

"All indications are still at this point that he suffered some unknown medical emergency," Bledsoe said. "Indications are he was still conscious immediately after the crash but then quickly lost  consciousness which is when bystanders stepped in and started giving him CPR."

The 911 call came in at 10:47 a.m. and the first offiver arrived at 10:52 a.m., Bledsoe said.

Fredericksburg Police Department are on the scene of a fatal crash at  

The crash happened before 11 a.m., police said, when the driver of a car crashed into a tree. 

Fredericksburg police public information office Natalia Bledsoe said a 51-year-old man from Stafford County was killed in the crash. 

"We are attempting to contact next of kin," said Bledsoe. Police are basing his identity off of information found in the car.

A witness saw the man in the car drive over a parking lot curb, cross the field and strike the tree, Bledsoe said. 

Mark Wolfery was sitting at a picnic table under a park pavilion when he said he saw the car coming at him.

"All of a sudden the car came speeding and went straight for the tree," said Wolfery. "When I saw it coming, I just ran."

Wolfery said he saw the air bags deploy in the car, and then went to ask the man if he was alright. Wolfery said that it appeared something wasn't right with the man but he did respond to say he was OK.

The victim was meeting friends at the park, Bledsoe said. One of the victim's friends saw the incident happen and another bystander performed CPR until two Fredericksburg police officers arrived on scene at 10:52 a.m. The two officers used an automatic electronic defibrillator on the man for about three minutes, Bledsoe said. The man was pronounced dead around 11 a.m, Bledsoe told Patch.
