Women's Lacrosse Tops Stevenson in Epic 3-OT Shootout

Junior Lauren Callison scored with 1:42 remaining in the third overtime period to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-15 victory at Stevenson University in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals on Tuesday in Owings Mills, Md. The goal capped an improbable comeback which saw the Eagles trail the entire second half, and then score two goals in the final minute and a half of the second overtime to force a third extra period.

UMW jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first half, with Catherine Kennedy scoring twice and Allie Kimmelman adding a goal and an assist in the run. But Stevenson responded and scored 10 of the game's next 12 goals to assume an 11-6 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

The Eagles answered with five straight goals of their own, with two coming from freshman Megan Gersbeck and two from Kennedy, to tie the score at 11 with 11:26 to go. The teams traded goals the rest of the way in regulation, as senior Katie Wallis scored in the final minutes to tie the score at 13.

In the first and second overtimes, the Mustangs scored twice to take a 15-13 lead with less than two minutes left. But Kennedy scored unassisted with 1:04 to play, and then assisted Keller Torrey with only 20 seconds left to again tie the score.

The third extra period, which is sudden death, saw UMW score on a Callison goal on a pass from Kimmelman with 1:42 to play for the game winner. The 16-15 lead was UMW's first lead since leading 5-4 with 3:16 left in the first half.

Kennedy led the Eagles with six goals and an assist, while Kimmelman had three goals and three assists. Erin Murphy and Gersbeck each scored twice, and Torrey had four assists.

The Eagles led in shots, 34-32, and junior goalie Dannielle Guigli had 12 saves in goal for UMW.

Mary Washington will visit Salisbury University on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the CAC Championship.

Rudman's Pinch Hit Clinches Win for Eagles

Freshman Jake Rudman provided a pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth inning to plate the winning run, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team edged Catholic University, 2-1, on Tuesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 25-14 on the year.

In a game very unlike the teams' meeting two weeks ago - a 13-11 UMW win at Talbot Field - freshmen pitchers Nick McGovern and Seth Taylor were strong from the start, as McGovern allowed one run on two hits in 1.1 innings, and Taylor pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering six hits.

Torey Mancari earned the win with three perfect innings with six strikeouts in his school-record 16th appearance.

Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Eric Rehbein and Brent Steffey singled, advanced on a bunt, and Rehbein scored on an RBI groundout by Mitchell Herringshaw. UMW won the game when Herringshaw led off the ninth with a single and stole second, and came home on Rudman's RBI single.
