Two tennis players advance to ITA quarterfinals amidst a busy day for UMW athletics

Charles and Apperson Advance to ITA Quarterfinals
University of Mary Washington freshman Evan Charles and junior Will Apperson have advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA USTA Southeast Regional Tournament on Saturday at UMW. Freshman Tyler Carey upset #1 seeded Eric Shulman in three sets before falling in the second round.
Charles advaned to the quarters by topping Morgan Dauer in the first round, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1, and then Zachary Kelm in the second round, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. Apperson beat Tommy Weibye 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, before winning over ninth seeded Taylor Shamshiri, 6-3, 6-2.
The tournament will continue at UMW on Sunday.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Christopher Newport University at 4:00 p.m.

UMW Field Hockey Falls to Salisbury 4-1
The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to top-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles fall to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Sea Gulls started the scoring just six minutes into the game, as Courtney Webster scored, and added two goals in a 1:25 span seven minutes later to carry a 3-0 advantage. The Gulls capped the first half scoring with seven minutes remainingto take a 4-0 lead to halftime.
UMW got on the board with eight minutes left as Florence George scored on a Caitlin Baker assist to close the gap to three.
The Sea Gulls led in shots, 16-8, and the Eagles led in penalty corners, 9-6. Junior Claire Gianelle had 10 saves for the Eagles, while Anna Cooke had five stops for Salisbury.

UMW Men Play to 1-1 Tie at Frostburg
The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team tied Frostburg State University, 1-1, through two overtimes on Saturday in Frostburg. The Eagles move to 4-4-2 on the season, and 2-0-1 in CAC play.
After a scoreless first half, the Eagles received a huge momentum boost when freshman goalkeeper Tyler Back stopped a Bobcat penalty kick. Moments later, junior Matt Poole scored to give UMW a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining.
Frostburg took control offensively, firing numerous shots inside the 80 minute mark, finally tying the score in the 84th minute. The teams played through a scoreless pair of overtimes.
The Bobcats led in shots, 21-7, and the Eagles held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Back made 11 saves in goal for the Eagles, while FSU goalie Abiye Jack had two saves.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Marymount University in another CAC contest starting at 4:00 p.m.
UMW Women's Soccer Falls to Salisbury, 2-0
The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team allowed a goal in each half in a 2-0 loss to rival Salisbury University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 6-3-1 overall and 2-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Eagles took the first chance in the game, but Salisbury responded with the next three shots, capped by Amanda Zyzak's goal at 24:41 on a Kira Mangone assist. The Sea Gulls held the lead at 1-0 to halftime.
In the second, the Eagles again started strongly, putting pressure on the Gulls early, but were unable to find the tying score. Sophomore Erin Reynolds nearly got the Eagles on the board, but her shot approximately ten minutes into the second half hit the far goal post and caromed away.
Less than two minutes later, the Gulls added an insurance goal, at 55:54, by Morgan Brasch. in all, Salisbury led in shots, 9-6, and in corner kicks, 4-2. Senior goalie Tina Brehm had four saves for the Eagles.
Mary Washington will return to action on Tuesday when they host Marymount University at 4:00 p.m.
