Officers responded at 2:20 a.m. Friday to the 1000 block of Wicklow Drive in the Fall Hill Apartments for a report of a male subject lying unresponsive in a stairwell, the police statement said. They found Wormley bleeding and suffering from an apparent stab wound to the chest.

Emergency life-saving measures were taken on the scene, and the victim was transported by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

A tip from a citizen led officers and police detectives to a residence in the apartment complex. Inside, an officer found Sumter hiding in a closet and detained him for questioning, according to the police statement. After further investigation, Sumter was arrested on a charge of first-degree homicide.

Friday’s homicide is the first in Fredericksburg since the shooting of Rodney Beanum on Nov. 24, 2013, police said.
