Intoxicated Woman Charged After Fighting With SRO At Local Elementary: Sheriff

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA — A Westmoreland woman was arrested Friday after an altercation with a school resource officer at Spotswood Elementary School in Spotsylvania County, according to authorities.

The incident began when the school resource officer was asked by office staff to assist with “an intoxicated and disorderly female” in the school’s front office, where she was trying to register a new student, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office. The officer asked the woman to step out of the front office area, and “immediately the female entangled the SRO in a physical struggle,” according to the release.

During the incident, the school resource officer was able to request additional units, the sheriff’s office reported. School staff and parents who witnessed the altercation also contacted the Emergency Communications Center to report what was happening, according to the release.

Additional deputies with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office arrived at the school and helped take the woman into custody, according to the sheriff’s office. The woman was identified as Corene Jones, 32, of Westmoreland.

Jones was charged with public intoxication, obstruction by force and possession of a weapon on school property, according to the sheriff’s office. She was remanded to the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

“We commend the SRO for their professionalism, courage, and commitment to keeping the school safe,” the sheriff's office said, in the release.“We also thank the school staff and parents who acted quickly by calling 911 and assisting during this incident.”
