Massaponax High On Lockdown After Bomb Threat

Update: 2:31 p.m.: The Spotsylvania School System released the following update and the below story has been changed to reflect that the threat was made via a text to a student: Today, a bomb threat was texted messaged to a student at Massaponax High from an individual not on school grounds. The Sheriff’s Office was contacted and we are following protocols lead by the Sheriff’s Department to ensure the safety of all students and staff.   School Administration in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the threat.  All students are safe.

Massaponax High School students were welcomed back to school Tuesday with a bomb threat, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office Lt. Troy Skebo said the threat was made toward the school at 11:25 a.m. and a school resource officer called the communications center to report it.

It's not clear who exactly received the threat, Skebo said. Tuesday is the first day of classes for the 2012-2013 school year.

The school was put under a lockdown; Skebo said a bomb-sniffing dog has been brought to the school to check for any explosives.

Skebo said the caller was not specific, so all of the students were evacuated from the school as an extra precaution. All are in a secure location somewhere on school property, he said.
