The chase began at 4:10 a.m., when an officer patrolling in the area of the Target store in Central Park, at 1180 Carl D. Silver Patrkway, saw a gray Volkswagen speeding through the parking lot with large boxes sticking out of the trunk.
The officer tried to stop the vehicle on Trade Street, but the Volkswagen increased speed and went through the red light at Central Park Boulevard, turning left as it headed toward Route 3 (Plank Road), the police report stated.
When the Volkswagen entered the curve in the road just prior to Regal Cinemas, at 3301 Plank Road, the driver lost control. The car left the road and crashed through a metal fence into a grassy area near the movie theater. The boxes that were in the trunk fell out onto the pavement.
The driver was detained without further incident. He was evaluated on the scene by EMS personnel and transported to Mary Washington Hospital, but he was uninjured, police said.
The boxes contained TVs, which were determined to have been stolen from Walmart just a few minutes before the chase, police said. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of drug paraphernalia in plain view inside the car.
