Serenity House Director Gets Four Years in Prison for Embezzling from the Non Profit

A prosecutor says the Richmond woman used the money for a veterinarian bill for her cat and car insurance among other things.

A Richmond woman who directed a Fredericksburg substance abuse resource center was sentenced to four years in prison for embezzling from the nonprofit, Monday Nov. 17.

Marlene Kae McCary, 60, pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Serenity Home in Fredericksburg in 2013. At her hearing Monday, McCary was sentenced to 40 years in prison with all but four years suspended. She is also required to pay back more than $90,000, according to The Free Lance-Star.

The Serenity Home, which offered Fredericksburg residents substance abuse services, closed in 2013 due to financial issues stemming from McCary’s theft.
