Shooting Suspect Dies After I-95 Crash In Stafford: Police

A man has been identified after fatally shooting his wife in Fredericksburg and crashing on I-95. He later died: Stafford County Sheriff.

STAFFORD — Gregory Lee, 42, has been identified as the man who shot and killed his wife Thursday at England Run North Apartments in Fredericksburg before leading police on an Interstate 95 chase that ended when he crashed, apparently after shooting himself in the head, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said. Lee died Thursday night from his injuries.

His wife, Melisa Dee Lee, died at the apartment after being shot three times in the chest. Police have not released a motive. During the chase, Lee shot at Virginia State Police and Stafford County officers, but none were hit. Police didn't return fire.

At about 11:30 a.m., after the initial shooting, the state police received a bulletin from Stafford police to be on the lookout for a black Ford Explorer headed north on I-95. When police spotted it and gave chase at the 136 mile marker, Lee didn't stop until the 138 mile marker.

That's when he stopped in the center lane, leaned out of his window and fired several rounds at the trooper. One penetrated the windshield, but the officer wasn't hit. Then, around the 140 mile marker, the truck slowed down and the driver again began firing at the pursuing cops.

This time a Stafford police car was hit, but the officer suffered only minor injuries. The suspect continued weaving in and out of traffic before side-swiping a vehicle at the 142 mile marker. He then lost control, ran off the right side of the road, hit a guardrail and flipped the truck, which landed on its roof.
