Spotsylvania Asking Residents for Input on Baseball Deal: Media Report

Spotsylvania County is asking for public input on a plan to build a minor league baseball stadium.

Under the plan, the county would borrow up to $43 million to build a 5,500-seat stadium and a parking garage on a site next to the Southpoint II shopping center, the Free Lance-Star reported. A Maryland baseball team, the Hagerstown Suns, has expressed interest in moving to the Fredericksburg area. The Suns are a Class A affilitate of the Washington Nationals.

When you click on the site, go to “County Highlights” and click on “Baseball information.” This webpage has a form for public comments at the top - those who write a comment must give their name, address and email address and indicate whether they’re a Spotsylvania resident.

The county has also received a 60-day extension to negotiate a deal with the Suns for a new stadium, the Free-Lance Star reported. Minor League Baseball has extended the deadline from May 31 to July 31, according to a letter sent to county officials by South Atlantic League President Eric Krupa.

The county is in talks with Krupa and Bruce Quinn, the owner of the Suns, who play in the South Atlantic League.
