State Farm Donates Harley To Sheriff's Office

State Farm Insurance donated a 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office after it discovered that it was on the books as having an unknown owner.

The motorcycle had been impounded as stolen since 2007, according to the sheriff's office. The motorcycle was listed as having an unknown owner until Sheriff Roger Harris ordered a review of evidence holdings this year after he took office. The 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle needed a tune-up and new ignition, but other than that it was in excellent condition, the sheriff's office said.

“We followed through and determined the original owner was now deceased, and that State Farm Insurance was now the legal owner,” said Sheriff’s Office Maj. Carter Wells in a press release.  “Although they were somewhat surprised by our discovery, and while they could have taken possession of it to cover the original loss, State Farm generously offered to donate the motorcycle to our department.”

Capt. Mike Harvey said it took three days to determine who owned the motorcycle, but several months passed before the sheriff's office rightfully could take ownership of the motorcycle.

"The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank State Farm Insurance for their enormous gift which will now be put into use for deputy training and education," Harvey said.
