Super Tuesday Primary: Who Won Fredericksburg?

Virginia gave wins to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, but Fredericksburg offered different results than what we saw statewide.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Super Tuesday results offered big wins for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, each winning seven states, including Virginia.

In Fredericksburg, voters had a different opinion on the candidates.

Republicans

In the city, Sen. Marco Rubio defeated Trump, with 32.7 percent of the vote to Trump’s 31.1 percent. Another notable difference from results statewide: Sen. Ted Cruz placed fourth behind Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Spotsylvania County was a different story, and helps explain Trump’s success, with a more than 10 percent advantage over Rubio.

Another example of the geographic divide among primary voters: Cruz had a 10 point lead in the county against Kasich.

Stafford primary voters also gave Trump a win, but by slimmer margin.

  • Donald Trump 31.12%
  • John Kasich 15.08%

Spotsylvania County

  • Marco Rubio, 27.07%
  • Ben Carson 6.88%
  • Ted Cruz 19.58%
  • Donald Trump 37.46%
  • John Kasich 8.04%

Stafford County

  • Marco Rubio, 30.89%
  • Ben Carson 6.61%
  • Ted Cruz 17.21%
  • Donald Trump 36.01%
  • John Kasich 8.18%

Democrats

Clinton won among Fredericksburg area voters, but Sanders performed better here than he did in the statewide results.

Clinton won 52 percent of the support in Fredericksburg, far below the 64 percent she won statewide. She won the neighboring counties by a wider margin, with 60 percent in Spotsylvania and Stafford.
