Suspect in Death of UMW Student Pleads Not Guilty

The suspect in the killing of a University of Mary Washington student pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to murder and other charges in the case, according to court records.
Steven Vander Briel, 31, is charged with 1st degree murder, abduction and strangulation. He is accused in the April death of 20-year-old Grace Rebecca Mann, 20, who was his housemate.
Two roommates testified in June that they came home to find the house in disarray. Vander Briel had claimed he had been defending himself from Mann.

He fled the scene and the roommates found Mann’s body. Vander Briel was arrested hours later by Fredericksburg Police.
On Tuesday, the case was continued until November 5.
