TONIGHT: HEAD TOWARD SPACE AT AM

Art Mart's Gallery Director Michelle Pierson pre show talks with RVa's Toward Space's Seyla Camille Hossain.

Art Mart is becoming the hot spot for music lately, Every Friday and Saturday people of all ages gather to hear a live band or see a gallery opening. This weekend Art Mart will be throwing a great showcase together featuring our very own FXBG’s Skumboyz, LNT, and RVa’s Toward Space from 6-9pm.

Every show is uniquely different and were expecting to have a lively riot-y crowd for this garage rock show. Take a break from your daily Netflix and chill and come thrash around and enjoy your Saturday night! Feel free to squad up!

Toward Space is composed of David Patton and Seyla Camille Hossaini from Richmond, Virginia. When asked about their band, Seyla responded, “We began making music soon after we met, we met when were about ten years old, David’s toenail fell off and he came up to me trying to gross me out but i thought it was cool and that’s how we met. We’ve been in and out of different bands but the two of us were always musical soulmates and stuck together. I play bass and sing, david plays guitar and drums at the same time since we don’t have a drummer at the moment but don’t want to stop gigging so he plays a snare and bass drum with his feet. We kind of consider ourselves an art band, as that allows us to be free of restriction and lets us be more experimental with our style. Our sound is relative to punk rock, overall pretty garage with undertones of psychedelia maybe sometimes, a little bit of power pop.”

Where do you usually play at? We play anywhere, venues, the street, in the bathtub...we like diy spaces a lot!

Is there anything in the making that we can be on the look for? Look forward to more lo fi soundcloud demos and eventually something better quality on bandcamp. Our fb page can keep ya posted on what we are up to. What’s your favorite place to hang out in Richmond? Probably at Texas beach with all the stray dogs and nudists.

Do you experiment with anything other than music? We both write fiction in our spare time, i write a lot of poetry which usually turns into songs. I know david does drawings in his notebooks a lot. I paint occasionally and make collages.

I was raised and still live above an art gallery, and that has influenced me a lot over the years, being able to hang out with artists all the time.

What band do you admire most? We admire so many bands, it feels impossible to pick one. But at this moment i’m feeling compelled to say Sparklehorse. Mark Linkous lived here in Richmond at one point and recorded at Sound of Music studios. His music has hugely influenced both David and I over the years.
