VA Republicans Postpone Richmond Convention Due To Coronavirus
The Republican Party said it postponed the convention because "its top priority is the health and well-being of Virginia's citizens."
RICHMOND, VA — The Republican Party of Virginia's executive committee voted Wednesday night to postpone its 2020 Quadrennial State Convention due to the coronavirus, or COVID-19. The Republican Party said "its top priority is the health and well-being of Virginia's citizens." The party said it has not decided on a new date for the convention.
The convention had been scheduled for May 1-2 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. During the meeting, party members are scheduled to elect delegates for the Republican National Convention in Charlotte in August and elect a state chairman. The Republican Party opted not to hold a presidential primary election in Virginia as a way to support President Donald Trump's reelection bid.
“We will not let this setback define our 2020 efforts,” Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Jack Wilson said Wednesday in a statement. “Republicans are more energized than ever to flip Virginia for President Trump and send our do-nothing Senator, Mark Warner, packing. Our motto remains ‘Join the Fight, Stay in the Fight.'”
