Valentine's Day Tasting Sunday at Rising Sun Tavern in Fredericksburg

Besides candy, folks be given a history lesson about how the treats evolved over the years and what made some more special than others.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Take a stroll through the history of Valentine's Day treats Sunday at the Rising Sun Tavern, 1304 Caroline Street.

It's "Sweet History: A Valentine's Tasting," 3-6 p.m., and it'll be hosted by nationally recognized candy historian Susan Benjamin.

Tickets are $15, and the event is recommended for those 16 and older.

Enjoy the candy and learn stories of how each of them came to be poplular. There will be a sampling of the earliest aphrodisiacs (4,000 years old), and Cinnamon Hearts (1940s) with such favorites as truffles (turn-of-century), Conversation Hearts (1860s), heart-shaped chocolates and the marshmallow sweets (2000 BCE/mid-1800s).
