$273K In Grants, Scholarships, Vouchers Awarded By The Herndon Closet

HERNDON, VA — Local non-profits, students and community members received $273,965 in grants, scholarships and vouchers recently from The Closet of The Greater Herndon Area, Inc., according to a release.

“The Closet is honored to be able to continue our commitment to supporting organizations and people in the community," said Gene Wiley, president of The Closet. "These funds will help each organization make an even greater impact on our community, and help students pursue their higher education goals."

Over the last 49 years, The Closet has donated nearly $2.4 million in grants and $731,000 in scholarships. The organization's grant programs was started to support the work of nonprofits in the community.

“Herndon-Reston FISH, Inc. was delighted to receive grant funding from The Closet in 2022," said Mary C. Saunders, executive director, Herndon-Reston FISH, Inc., in a release. "These funds were used to further our mission to help Herndon and Reston residents cope with short-term financial crises by providing Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help. We are thankful for our partnership with The Closet and the funds provided to assist our program in helping our neighbors in need."

As part of its 2022 program, The Closet awarded $42,000 in scholarships students at Dominion, Herndon, Mountain View, Park View, South Lakes, and Westfield high schools. The scholarships help pay for the students' post-secondary education.

As part of its 2022 voucher program, The Closet gave $140,000 in free clothing and essential household items to residents receiving assistance from local governmental and community-based organizations.

The Herndon Closet is located at 845 Station St. in Herndon. Its hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.. It's also open Monday and Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. More information about The Herndon Closet is available online.
