ArtSpace Herndon Announces 2012 Fine Art Photography Winners

Woodbridge's Sharon Eisenzopf takes first place in 2012 Fine Art Photography Competition at ArtSpace Herndon.

ArtSpace Herndon and the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts announced the winners of the 2012 Fine Art Photography Competition this week. The first place prize of $300 was awarded to Sharon Eisenzopf of Woodbridge for her photo, Passing Through.

The juror of the exhibit, Mary Louise Ravese said the image brought together all the elements of a fine art black and white photograph, including line and composition, texture and tonal range.

“The circular passageway is interesting and presented off-center," she said in a press release. "The texture on the front wall draws you in and the lines of wet pavers contrast with the direction of the traffic flow through the passageway. The man with the umbrella is captured at just the right point. The photograph is well composed and well executed.”

The second place winner, receiving $200, was Larry Dean of Damascus, MD., with Library of Congress Arches. The photograph shows the arches of the Library of Congress. “These angles are complemented by the interesting patterns in the painting on the wall and color adds a sense of depth and visual interest,” Ravese said.

Michael Kane's In Flight took third place, winning $100. Ravese made note of the sharp focus of the two birds in the upper left of the photograph with the other birds in the frame that are out of focus. “In black and white, it’s an interesting image with wide appeal,” Ravese said.

The winning photographs, as well as all the finalist entries, will be on exhibit at ArtSpace through May 30 in the Post Gallery. More than 75 photographers from Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland entered the competition and there are 58 finalist images. “The quality of work is phenomenal,” Ravese said.
