Bicyclist Dies After Struck by SUV in Nighttime Crash
A 29-year-old Fairfax resident struck a local cyclist from behind on Sunrise Valley Drive in Herndon Monday evening, resulting in one death.

A 38-year-old man died in Reston Hospital Center Monday evening after he was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle in Herndon.
The victim’s identity has not been released at this time as his next of kin has yet to be reached.
A preliminary investigation by detectives with Fairfax County Police’s Crash Reconstruction Unit determined the crash took place at approximately 8 p.m. Monday evening.

The victim and another man were riding their bikes northbound on Sunrise Valley Drive near Coppermine Road in Herndon when the victim was struck by a 2014 Chevrolet Suburban SUV from behind.
The cyclists were not wearing reflective clothing nor were they shining lights from their bikes to indicate their presence on the road, investigators reported.

The driver of the SUV is a 29-year-old Fairfax resident who remained on the scene following the crash. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash, investigators stated.
