How to get $62.50 Worth of Groceries for $5.99

Who doesn't want to save at the grocery store? Go online and follow a few simple steps and you can cut your grocery bills by 20, 50 or even 90 percent.

I spent a combine total of $5.99 at Harris Teeter and CVS this week.  I purchased $62.50 worth of product for just under six bucks.  You can do it too by signing up for e-mails, purchasing items on sale, using coupons and cashing in on savings sent directly to your loyalty card or printed at the register.

 To save at CVS:

  1. Go to CVS.com and click on ExtraCare.  Register and you will receive a coupon for $4 off a $20 purchase. You’ll receive weekly e-mails and with just a click, savings will be sent directly to your ExtraCare card.
  2. Purchase a green tag at the store for .99.  Bring a reusable shopping bag, scan your green tag and ExtraCare card and CVS will reward you with $1 in ExtraBucks every four shopping trips.
  3. Buy items that generate ExtraBucks each time you shop.  This week, if you buy $15 worth of Coke and/or Planters products (see back of circular) you receive $5 in ExtraBucks.
  4. Use coupons, coupons and more coupons.  I saved using $5 in ExtraBucks, $5 sent to my card (on a $15 purchase) and $3 in manufacture’s coupons.  I paid $2.09 for $15.19 worth of items plus I got $3 back in ExtraBucks.  That’s how you do it!

  1. Sign up for all the newsletters.  Read the newsletters and e-mails, they often contain information and links for additional savings.  The Health and Wellness newsletter informed me of that if I transferred/refilled or brought a new prescription to the HT pharmacy I would get $20 off my next grocery purchase.  The saving was automatically sent to my VIC card.  I wouldn’t have known about that promotion unless I received the Health and Wellness newsletter.  I’ve saved $40 so far this month and have at least one more refill before the promotion ends on 4/3/12.  That was how I was able to get $ 50 worth of groceries for $3.89.  I also used lots of paper and electronic coupons plus in store automatic savings when purchasing certain items.
  2. Click on “My Dashboard” to make sure you are signed up for E-VIC savings, coupons and newsletter, plus you can register your preferred school.

This Week’s Friday Recipe:   Shrimp Lo-mein

We’ve made this dish in the teen and adult/child classes at the Herndon Community Center.  It was well like by all ages.

8 ounces Chinese egg or rice noodles or linguine, cooked

1 tablespoon peanut or canola oil

¼ onion, thinly sliced

1 teaspoon minced gingerroot

2 baby bok choy, sliced

1 clove of garlic, minced

8 ounces peeled and deveined shrimp, chopped

1 tablespoon oyster sauce

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 green onion, sliced

Heat the oil in a wok or large sauté pan over medium high heat.  Stir fry the onion, ginger and bok choy  for 3 minutes.  Add the garlic and shrimp and stir fry until shrimp is opaque.  Add the noodles, oyster sauce, soy and green onion.  Stir fry for 1 minute.  Makes 2 servings.
