Rep. Wolf Says One Thing, Then Votes the Other Way

Representative Frank Wolf spoke out against the sequester before voting to keep it in Congress.

Despite continual claims that the sequester “doesn’t make sense,” and that he is “opposed to sequestration,” Representative Frank Wolf followed Republican allies in voting against an amendment to the Continual Resolution that would remove the across-the-board cuts. Through his vote, Rep. Wolf chose to furlough hundreds of thousands of Virginians and make cuts to programs many Virginians rely on at a time when our economy is still recovering. Now that the resolution has passed in the Senate, it is even more of a viable solution to prevent a government shutdown on March 27th.

There is an easy and sensible alternative to the $83 billion in annual cuts – closing corporate tax loopholes and making sure multibillion-dollar corporations like Facebook and GE start paying their fair share of taxes. While the sequester is putting over 100,000 jobs at risk in Virginia, Facebook is cashing in a $429 million tax rebate to pad its $1.1 billion in profits. By ending the use of offshore tax havens alone we can completely avoid the sequester.

While Northern Virginia is already feeling the effects of deep cuts through an uneasy business market, it is not too late for Rep. Wolf to end the sequester and stay true to his word. By voting for a budget plan that closes corporate tax loopholes and avoids deep cuts, Rep. Wolf will be supporting Virginia’s teachers, students, small businesses, and economy.
