This Week at Smart Markets Reston Farmers' Market

Organically grown garlic and yummy Celtic Pasties at this week's market.

I am at the beach this week, so all you get is this puny update. But there is some news to impart about what’s new at the market.

Nevin Hostetter of Heritage Farm and Kitchen called me yesterday to let me know that they are now bringing early (and small) organically grown garlic to market. So for your pesto, pasta, hummus and good health, stop by Heritage Farm to purchase some. Also this week, look for their first green beans and strawberries. Nevin also wanted me to alert you to their new labeling plan. Several of their farmers are now sending either organic or no-pesticide products, and they will be labeled as such with a sticker that says “All Natural.” You can always ask the Martins at Heritage Farm about what they have — if they do not know how one of the products has been grown, they will find out for you.

If not this week, then by next week you will also find half-chickens in their chicken cooler. There is a method to this madness other than just making it easier for you to prepare and grill chicken this summer. The boneless chicken breasts are so popular that Heritage Farm accumulates lots of thighs, legs, and wings over the summer. Learning to love the dark meat as well as the white will be good for your family and good for HF&K too. They will soon be packaging those parts in family packs, so look for those, too. And when I return we will have good ideas for grilling those half-chickens this summer.

This week Celtic Pasties will have Beef & Guinness, Cottage Pie Style, Mango Chicken, and Cheese & Onion, plus (returning by popular demand) Colcannon, Greek Chicken, and Greek Vegetable.

This is the time of year when each stand has something new each week. It’s almost like Where’s Waldo? at the farmers’ market. Keep your mind and eyes open for the next new thing, and if you need help with the “mind” part, look for new recipes at the Smart Markets tent.

See you at the market!
