To Vote or Not to Vote, That is the Question!

Not surprisingly, your votes DO count in our election.

In Herndon, we have almost 12,000 registered voters. If "trends" are correct, somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 of them will take the opportunity to vote on May 1st.

Many Herndon residents are happy with the way things are and think those things will remain the same regardless of what they do—vote or not vote. Maybe they’re correct; my historical perspective says they’re not correct.

I’d hasten to add that as a mayoral candidate, I’d appreciate it if you would take the time to go to the polls and vote for me. I am working hard for your votes and my "reward"—or "Good Luck" as many wish for me when we meet—comes in the form of your votes for me on Tuesday, May 1st.

Not surprisingly, your votes DO count in our election. In 1992, in my first effort to be re-elected to council, I finished 7th (as in I was not re-elected) by nine votes. NINE VOTES. Countless folks told me they couldn’t believe it. The probable reason was that some voters "presumed" I’d be elected and decided that "others" would take care of re-electing me. NINE VOTES. I was re-elected in 1994.

I think most town residents know that our vice mayor is the individual who receives the most votes for council. That’s been the tradition for at least two decades. In two elections, in which I was elected to the council, I finished one vote and three votes behind the top vote getter. No sour grapes; I made the motion in both instances to appoint the first-place vote getter as vice mayor. My point is, YOUR votes and therefore your choices count.

PLEASE mark your calendars (paper, Outlook, etc.) with a reminder to vote on Tuesday, May 1st. Those of who take the time and expend the energy to run for mayor and council, because we think a good town government made up of independent individuals is important, would appreciate your votes.
