By the Numbers: Mayoral Candidates' Campaign Finance Reports

The first campaign finance reports for the Herndon Town Council and Mayoral candidates are in.

The first campaign finance reports are available at the Virginia State Board of Elections for Herndon town council and mayoral candidates. Here's a look at the biggest contributions and expenditures of the three mayoral candidates, Lisa Merkel, Jasbinder Singh and Bill Tirrell. The full reports can be found at the SBE website. 

 

LISA MERKEL
• 16 total contributions over $100 – $3,337
• Two in-kind contributions over $100 – $415.67
• 37 un-itemized cash contributions under $100 – $1,864.04
• Total expenditures – $2,324.83
• Ending balance – $2,876.21

Lisa Merkel has 55 total contributions to her campaign.

Her largest contributors were Herndon Planning Commissioner Kevin East, who donated $500, Herndon resident Stephen Mundt, who donated $500, and Penny Halpern, who donated a little over $290 through both contributions over $100 and in-kind contributions. Additionally, Nachman Real Estate Services donated $250 to her campaign.

Merkel's largest expenditures have been for door hangers, at a cost of $724.13, and yard signs, costing $542.85.

 

JASBINDER SINGH
• Two contributions over $100 – $450
• Five un-itemized cash contributions under $100 – $496
• Total expenditures – $4,209.71
• Ending balance – $2,307
• Loans received this period – $5,570.71

Jasbinder Singh has a total of five contributions to his campaign. 

Singh's donors include Herndon residents Deepak Kataria, who contributed $250, and Sivadasan Madhavan, who contributed $299. Singh also has loans, provided from his company and himself, in the amount of $5,570.71.

Singh's largest expenditure was for $3,215.71, which included flyer design and printing, website design, and Facebook and Twitter services. His second largest expenditure, for $900, was to the same company for a campaign logo, and flyer design and printing. 

 

WILLIAM TIRRELL
• Two contributions over $100 – $500
• Twenty four un-itemized cash contributions under $100 – $1,638.29
• One un-itemized in-kind contribution under $100 – $100
• Total expenditures – $2,878.99
• Ending balance – $4,259.30
• Loans received this period – $5,000

Bill Tirrell has a total of 27 contributions to his campaign. 

Tirrell's two largest contributions came from Tom Rust, for $300, and Ted Hochstein, for $200. Tirrell's wife contributed a loan to his campaign in the amount of $5,000. 

Tirrell's largest expenditures were for campaign signs, totaling $2,036, as well as $292.50 for an advertisement on Patch.
