Christmas Day Weather Forecast for Herndon: Any Chance of Snow?

We've had some cold snaps this month, but preliminary forecasts indicate that the conditions on Christmas won't be ideal for snow at all.

HERNDON, VA — Christmas Day is right around the corner in Herndon, and the likely weather forecast for the day is starting to take shape. Unfortunately, if you're a fan of having a White Christmas, you probably won't get your wish.

Tuesday, Dec. 20, will be fairly chilly, but things will be warming up for pretty much the remainder of the year, including on Dec. 24 and 25, when temperatures are expected to reach a high of 50 degrees and a low of 34 degrees, simply too warm for any kind of snow, even though some precipitation is expected late Christmas night.

But it will be a lovely Christmas Day, with chilly -- but not too cold -- temperatures under sunny skies for the Herndon area. Winds will be "light and variable," according to Weather.com.

So when was the last time we actually got a White Christmas in the D.C. area? You'd have to go all the way back to 2002, when we got less than an inch -- a dusting, at best. According to DCist, it has snowed on Christmas in D.C. less than 10 times over the last 127 years. There was at least snow on the ground on Christmas Day in 2009, but that was due to the "snowpocalypse" that had happened a few days prior.
