HERNDON, VA — An eye-opening new map from Fairfax County showing where crashes involving young drivers occur indicates that Herndon is a pretty safe place to drive.

Only one crash in 2016 appears to have happened within Herndon town limits, although nearby Reston has plenty of accidents, especially on Wiehle Avenue and other roads near Dulles Toll Road.

Overall, 1,840 young drivers were involved in crashes in Fairfax County last year. Fortunately, in 97 percent of cases, teen drivers were wearing seat belts, and in only 2 percent of cases was alcohol involved. Also, the total number of 17- and 18-year-old drivers involved in crashes has declined by almost 100 occurrences compared to 2015, according to the county.
