HERNDON, VA — The process for Herndon residents looking to be tested for COVID-19, the virus associated with the new coronavirus, will soon be as simple as visiting your local pharmacy.

CVS Health announced Thursday it was going to add 2,000 additional COVID-19 drive-thru test sites at select CVS pharmacy locations across the country, including one in Herndon.

Already managing the largest number of independently run COVID-019 testing sites in the U.S., CVS Health is aiming to have more than 4,000 sites operating by mid-October. In the coming weeks, it will be rolling out new testing sites in 33 states and Washington, D.C., with 400 opening this Friday.

“Since opening our first test site in March, we’ve been able to quickly adapt to the changing landscape in order to make it easier for people in the communities we serve to access testing,” said Jon Roberts, CEO of CVS Health and acting president of CVS Pharmacy, in a release. “We recognize the critical role testing plays in helping to manage the spread of the virus and are incredibly proud of how our teams have responded to this need while continuing to take care of our customers, clients and patients.”

The CVS sites will use self-swab tests, which will be available to individuals who meet CDC criteria, in addition to age guidelines. Patients looking to be tested must register in advance on CVS' website to schedule an appointment.

Currently, most test results collected at CVS Pharmacies will be available within two to three days.
