All of Fairfax County's fire and rescue stations are holding open houses Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Fire Prevention Week.
The theme this year is "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With." On Saturday firefighters and paramedics will have displays and activities that emphasize fire safety, including preventing fires and fire injuries. Residents are encouraged to visit a nearby fire station to learn more about fire prevention.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire that killed more than 250 people in 1871 and left more than 100,000 people homeless.

Nearly 3,000 people die in home fires each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. About two thirds of those deaths are because there were no smoke alarms in the home or the smoke alarms were not working. To learn more about fire prevention visit www.firepreventionweek.org.
