Friday Snow In Herndon: 5 Things You Need To Know

Will we get a dusting Friday, or maybe a bit more than that? We answer all those questions and more.

We've had a couple busts this week as far as potential snow, but Friday has strong potential to be the real deal in the D.C. area. Here are a few things you need to know about Friday's projected snowfall in the area.

Really? Are we actually going to get some snow?

Yes! In fact, we might get up to 2 inches of snow (but probably not). The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for our area, with greater potential for snow to the north and east.

Now as a caveat, we are right on the edge of some of the heavier snow and the "dusting" range, so it's about a coinflip at the moment whether we'll get an inch of snow. For areas south and west of D.C., that's even less likely. But we'll definitely see something.

When are we going to see flakes?

The NWS' weather advisory runs through the afternoon into early evening, with snow expected to really break out during the midday. The snow should end by tonight. There's a chance the snow ends by the evening commute.

Of course, that will mean things will get a bit messy if you need to travel home from work along with everybody else.

"In the advisory area, allow extra time for commuting and, if you’re averse to driving in the snow, consider waiting for the snow to end rather than leaving in the midst of it," the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang reportsreports. "It should rapidly taper off by around 4 or 5 p.m."

How cold is it going to get?

It'll be positively frigid. Expect a cloudy day with highs in the mid-30s at best, and lows will plunge into the 20s tonight once again.

What does the weekend forecast look like?

The clouds will clear by Saturday, so it will be sunny and, consequently, a bit warmer. Highs will reach into the upper 40s. Sunday will start to see the clouds roll back in, but highs will actually increase, perhaps into the low 50s.

When's our next chance for snow?

It's tough to say, but our chances for a white Christmas have certainly dipped. We're going to break out of the extreme cold snap we've experienced and see some pretty high temperatures -- the Weather.com forecast calls for a high of 59 degrees on Dec. 22, for example. The extended range forecast suggests we could get PM snow showers on Dec. 28, but that's way too far out in the future to say with any confidence.
