'Herndon' Chosen as Official Metrorail Station Name
The future Metro station just south of the Town of Herndon and on the north side of the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be named Herndon.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority approved the name "Herndon" for the future Metro station just south of the Town of Herndon near the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride.
WMATA voted for the name April 26 after a process in which Fairfax County recommended names and WMATA surveyed the public on station names.
Metro’s station naming policy requires new station names to be approved by the Metro board. The board recommends that names identify the station locations by geographical features or centers of activity, are distinctive and evoke imagery in the minds of patrons, and are no longer than 19 characters, including spaces and punctuation.

WMATA’s survey was available for area residents and Metro riders to take between Feb. 21 and March 21. More than 16,200 people completed the survey, with about 47 percent self-identifying as being from Fairfax County.
Fairfax County’s Department of Transportation discussed proposed names with the public at community meetings and recommended the "Herndon" name to WMATA. The Fairfax County board voted for its recommended names on April 10.
