Herndon College Students Earn Academic Honors From Their Schools

Patch highlights the honors received by Herndon students from their college or university.

HERNDON, VA — To shine a light on the academic achievements of college students from the Herndon area, Patch shares information provided by the students' families and Merit News.

Jessica Saylor, a mass communications major with a concentration in public relations from Herndon was named to the dean's list at Virginia Commonwealth University for the fall 2022 semester. Jessica, a junior at VCU, earned the honor by posting a 4.0 grade point average. To be eligible for the dean's list at VCU, students must earn a 3.5 or higher grade point average for that semester.

The following students recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines:

  • Jessica Burkett of Herndon at George Mason University
  • Leena Pai of Herndon at Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Anjali Pendala of Herndon at George Mason University
  • Chandresh Singh of Herndon at George Mason University

Lucas Robins of Herndon was among the more than 900 cadets and students recognized for their academic achievements during the spring 2022 semester. Gold stars are awarded to cadets and students at The Citadel who achieved a 3.7 grade point average or higher. Cadets and students who achieve gold star recognition are also placed on The Citadel's dean's list.

The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta awarded degrees to approximately 1,660 undergraduate and graduate students at the conclusion of summer semester. Among the graduates were:

Pauline Tillotson of Herndon is a member of the class of 2023 and a computer science major at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. Tillotson received The David Brian Cross Memorial Award for Achievement in Mathematics during the Nov. 6, 2022 Undergraduate Awards Ceremony.

Alessandra Mandala Kol of Herndon is a member of the class of 2023 and a chemistry major at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. Mandala Kol received The Harry Clary Jones Scholarship for Chemistry, during the Nov. 6, 2022 Undergraduate Awards Ceremony.

Shenandoah University student Elise Velasquez of Herndon was one of nine field hockey players named to the 2022 All-ODAC squad, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022. Velasquez was also named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year, joining three other hornets' players on the first team. Defenders Velasquez and her teammate Madison Short helped the Hornets hold opponents to 23 goals during the 2022 season.

Tyler Brown of Herndon was initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, at National Intelligence University.

Christine Adams of Herndon graduated with a PHD (English) from Ohio University's College of Arts and Sciences in summer 2022.

Dylan Latimer of Herndon was one of 50 individuals who were selected for Shenandoah University's 2023 Global Citizenship Project. Latimer will travel during spring break in March to one of five international or domestic destinations.

Abbey Setlik of Herndon was among the student-scientists presenting original research at Ohio Wesleyan University's 30th annual Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium. Setlik participated in a group presentation of "Using Genetics to Determine the Components of Gravity Sensing in Arabidopsis thaliana," conducted at Ohio Wesleyan. Setlik was also named to the 2022 fall semester dean's list.

The following students were among the more than 700 students who earned scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University during the fall 2022 semester:

  • Danny Harkin of Herndon and a graduate of Oakton High School is majoring in instrumental performance. He earned the E.S. & M.R. Griffiths Scholarship.
  • Cassie White of Herndon and a graduate of Westfield High School is majoring in acting (BFA). She earned the Sigma Phi Epsilon Scholarship. White also was named to the dean's list for the fall 2022 semester.

Nearly 750 first-year and transfer students arrived at York College of Pennsylvania for the opening of the fall 2022 semester, including:

  • Nicholas Bordovsky of Herndon plans to study mechanical engineering.
  • Paige Goldstein of Herndon plans to study early elementary education.

The following students were among those who earned president's list honors for the fall 2022 semester at Shenandoah University in Winchester:

  • Grace Valcicak of Herndon
  • Kaylan Schoenefeldt of Herndon
  • Brittney Hines of Herndon
  • Elise Velasquez of Herndon
  • Rachel Miaw of Herndon
  • Katelyn Garback of Herndon

To qualify for the president's list, SU students enrolled in baccalaureate degree programs must complete at least 12 semester hours and earn a semester GPA of 3.90 or higher.

The following students were about the 579 students named to the fall 2022 dean's honors list at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland:

  • Annie Brennan of Herndon
  • Amanda Greger of Herndon

Jimmy Rosend of Herndon was named to the 2022 fall semester dean's list at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia. Rosend is a computer science major. Students on the dean's list have attained a 3.4 or better grade point average out of a possible 4.0.

McDaniel College announces its Fall 2022 dean's list, recognizing full-time undergraduate students for outstanding academic achievement, including:

The following students were named to the fall 2022 dean's list at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland:

  • Norman Armstrong of Herndon has been recognized with honors.
  • Colin Rill of Herndon has been recognized with high honors.
  • Ingrid Mandala Kol of Herndon has been recognized with highest honors.

Highest honors are earned for a semester grade point average of 3.90 or higher, high honors for a grade point average of 3.70-3.89, and honors for a 3.50-3.69 grade point average.

The following students were named to the fall 2022 dean's last at Pennsylvania Western University in California, Pennsylvania:

  • Krystal Anderson of Herndon
  • Maya Anderson of Herndon
  • Jaden Snead of Herndon
