Herndon House Fire Displaces 2, Causes Nearly $100K in Damage

The fire spread through the top floor of a single-family home in a quiet neighborhood.

WASHINGTON, DC — Two people and two dogs have been displaced after a fire ravaged a home in a Herndon neighborhood on Monday, causing nearly $94,000 in damage.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a house fire in the 12200 block of Parkstream Terrace at around 7:43 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12. When they arrived, they found a two-story, single-family home with fire showing from the front, according to a report from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

"Two adult occupants and two dogs had safely evacuated before the fire department arrived," the report states. "Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The bulk of the fire was contained to a second floor bedroom with minor extension into the attic area."

An occupant of the home smelled smoke and found a fire before the smoke alarms were set off. The fire started in a second-floor bedroom, and investigators are still working to determine the cause.

The occupants have refused Red Cross assistance.
