Herndon Mayor Receives Trustee Leadership Award

HERNDON, VA — Mayor Lisa Merkel received a Trustee Leadership Award from Leadership Fairfax during a virtual awards ceremony on Friday Morning. She was one of seven community leaders and organizations recognized with 2020 Northern Virginia Leadership Awards for having a significant impact on Northern Virginia through volunteerism, collaboration, and community engagement.

Merkel, who is finishing her third and final term as mayor, was honored for her leadership and advocacy for the town, according to a news release:

"Herndon is a 4.2 square mile town with personality, purpose and a vision for the future because of her efforts, and it will continue to grow into the future because of her leadership and vision. Mayor Merkel has advocated for Herndon’s infrastructure, built the town’s social media presence, developed programs directed at inclusivity, and established a Youth Advisory Council to inspire future generations."

In addition to Merkel, Leadership Fairfax recognized the following individuals and organizations during the 2020 Northern Virginia Leadership Awards ceremony:

• COVID-19 Hero - Individual: John Wood, owner of 29 Diner
• COVID-19 Hero – Organization: Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke and South County
• Nonprofit Leadership Individual: Danielle Craddock, founder and director – GIRL
• Nonprofit Leadership Organization: Insight Memory Care Center
• Corporate Leadership: Northwest Federal Credit Union
• Regional Leadership: Victor Hoskins, CEO – Fairfax County Economic Development Authority
