These scams are seen all around the area, and often involve a caller claiming to have captured a close relative of the victim, demanding money to release the person. In reality, there has been no kidnapping. Scammers will also call pretending to be from the local police, the Internal Revenue Service or some other government organization demanding payment for fines to avoid jail.

Police ask that you report any such phone call to them so they can investigate.
